Tips & tricks:

  • A cookie scoop makes shaping your cookies a breeze. You get quick, uniform dough balls every time.
  • Using a Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix to whip up sugar cookie dough is a huge timesaver. Add a little cocoa to the mix and turn it into chocolate sugar cookies.
  • When baking holiday cookies, make double or triple batches. It saves a ton of time in the long run!
  • Start making your Christmas cookies early and freeze them. Baked cookies will easily last 3 months in the freezer. When party season arrives, you will be able to put together a holiday cookie tray in no time.

More holiday cookie ideas:

  • Peanut butter blossoms – Instead of a chocolate cookie and mint Kisses, make peanut butter cookies and add plain milk chocolate Kisses.
  • Sugar cookies – Whether you prefer a crispy or chewy sugar cookie, they are a classic for any holiday. Use seasonal cookie cutters and decorate with royal icing.
  • A shortbread cookie sprinkled with red or green sprinkles is always festive.
  • Chewy ginger cookies

FAQs

Does the toothpick trick work for brownies? ›

To test for doneness with a toothpick, insert a toothpick into the center of the brownies and pull it back out. For fudgy brownies, you'll want to see some moist crumbs attached to the toothpick when you pull it back out. If it looks like it's covered in brownie batter, the brownies will need to bake a bit longer.

How to pimp brownies? ›

Peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, Nutella, caramel sauce, or white or dark chocolate fudge all make great additions when swirled into the batter. To swirl you'll make your brownies as usual then pour them into your baking dish then add dollops of the sauce you want to swirl in.

Is candy cane candy? ›

A candy cane is a cane-shaped stick candy often associated with Christmastide, as well as Saint Nicholas Day. It is traditionally white with red stripes and flavored with peppermint, but the canes also come in a variety of other flavors and colors.

How do you doctor up Betty Crocker brownie mix? ›

Add a teaspoon of instant coffee or espresso powder. Throw in a handful of nuts—pecans, walnuts, macadamia, whatever you have on hand. Scoop in a palmful of dried or frozen fruit. Add an extra splash of the top-shelf vanilla extract, or a dab of vanilla paste, or a dash of vanilla powder, to the batter.

Why are my brownies still wet in the middle? ›

If the brownies still look wet or aren't pulling away, they aren't done. Even fudgy brownies will pull from the edges once they've finished baking. You'll see that the edges look dry while the middle still looks soft or slightly wet. Chewy and cakey brownies will have dry edges with firmer-looking centers.

What happens when you add an extra egg to brownie mix? ›

They give brownies a lighter, drier, and more cake-like texture. If you prefer this over the chewy variety, then go ahead and crack in that additional egg. On the other hand, too many eggs will yield brownies that are hard, heavy, and tough.

Can I use milk instead of water in brownie mix? ›

One change is to use milk or heavy cream instead of water. This change will make brownies more moist and gooey since milk is more fatty and flavorful than water. A second change is to use butter instead of oil. For similar reasons to using milk, butter adds a rich and more decadent quality to the batter.

Can I use butter instead of oil in brownie mix? ›

You can absolutely substitute butter for the vegetable oil. Use the same quantity specified in the directions (for example, if it calls for 1/3 cup of oil, use 5 1/3 tablespoons of butter). Melt it down, then let it cool a bit. You might not ever go back to oil!

What were candy canes originally called? ›

“Legend has it that the candy cane dates back to 1670, when the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany handed out sugar sticks among his young singers to keep them quiet during the Living Creche ceremony,” Schildhaus says. “In honor of the occasion, he bent the candies into shepherds' crooks.”

Is there a green candy cane? ›

Is Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker better for brownie mix? ›

How can I jazz up a brownie mix? ›

Add nuts – Add a handful of finely chopped pecans or walnuts if you love brownies with nuts. Add mix ins – Jazz up a basic brownie mix with chopped mini peanut butter cups, white chocolate chunks, or your favorite chopped up candy bar. Add a swirl – Swirl in spoonfuls of peanut butter or Nutella before baking.

What happens if you add baking soda to a brownie mix? ›

Adding baking powder or a combination of baking soda and cream of tartar to a brownie recipe makes it much more like chocolate cake, creating a lighter and airier texture.

What is the trick to getting brownies out of pan? ›

The best way to do this is to place a lightweight cutting board over the top of the pan. Flip it and set it on the counter. Gently pull the pan from the brownies to release them, then carefully peel off and remove the foil or parchment paper.
