Al-Shidhani,S. "Developing capacity building through professional development and career options : insights from the petroleum profession." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2017. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3006955/.

Full text

Abstract:

This research addresses the subject and practice of capacity building through professional development and career ladders in the petroleum (oil and gas) upstream or Exploration and Production (EP) sector. It focuses upon petroleum professions concerned with the evaluation, development and production of petroleum resources – notably petroleum engineers and geoscientists. The study adopts an insider action research methodology, with a particular focus on a national oil company – Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) LLC, which operates in the Sultanate of Oman. PDO epitomises a typical EP company undertaking significant professional development efforts across its sizeable pool of petroleum professionals. Despite its wide operational remit, however, there are some key issues that have affected the firm and that warrant scholarly interrogation. Notable amongst these are challenges in developing specialists, technical professionals and managers who are competent and able to address the increasing technical, developmental, commercial, and managerial difficulties facing the oil and gas sector. Consequently, this study seeks to propose actionable remedial strategies to address these managerial skills and organizational capability gaps. This research thesis offers valuable literature review of the concepts and practices related to capacity building, professional development, and career aspects. This has enabled bridging conceptualization gaps underpinning professional development and career management in the EP petroleum sector, particularly in PDO, and identifying elements and aspects that were considered in evaluating the studied case. Further, by examining PDO’s organizational records and codes of practice, the study has established the company’s intended strategies and approaches, hence allowing identifying gaps with practices as assessed by engaging PDO’s executives, team leaders, and professionals.

Assaad,ElizabethA. "Early Second-career Faculty: a Phenomenological Study of Their Transition Into a New Profession." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc804875/.

Full text

Abstract:

In this phenomenological study I investigated the experiences of early second-career, tenure-track faculty members who entered academe after working in a position outside of higher education for at least five years. The purpose of this study was to learn about experiences and factors that contributed or impeded to the success of second-career faculty members. Eight early second-career faculty members, from a four-year university located in the Dallas Metroplex area, were interviewed. Participants demographics were ages 34 to 68 with the average age being 45; 50% male and 50% female; and one African American, six Caucasian, and one Hispanic and/or Latino. Participants’ previous professional experience was a benefit in teaching and relating to students, in understanding the complex university bureaucracy, and in setting goals. The participants reported that mentoring, whether formally assigned by the institution or through informal means such as departmental colleagues or professional organizations, was a benefit to all of the participants. A primary area of concern for the participants was collaboration and collegiality with other faculty members. Participants stated that traditional faculty members lack the skills and training to collaborate effectively in researching and in joint teaching endeavors. Participants reported that they had to monitor and restrain their opinions during interactions with departmental colleagues during the probationary period leading up to tenure decisions because the participants fear retaliation by co-faculty members who will vote on whether to grant them tenure. These participants bring a wealth of industry experience and knowledge to the university. Administrators, departmental chairs, and future early second-career faculty members will find that this research provides recommendations that, if heeded, will ensure a long and productive mutually beneficial affiliation.

Caven, Valerie. "Building a career : gender and employment in a male-dominated profession." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1999. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11728/.

Full text

Abstract:

Models of employment have become gendered with the 'standard' or masculine model following an unbroken, linear career path whilst the feminine model comprises periods of both full-time and part-time employment as well as intervals of non-participation in the labour market. Commitment to work is defined against these norms with those women who follow the masculine career pattern being said to display greater commitment to work than those who follow an alternative path. It is considered that career progression within an organisational hierarchy is dependent upon following the ‘standard' type of career path, which disadvantages women as historically they have been less likely than men to follow such a path. This thesis argues that there has been an over reliance on such explanations to illustrate and justify women's employment. Such studies patronise women by imposing these explanations on them without work being done to investigate women's own evaluations of their employment. The aim of this research is to examine the working arrangements of a group of highly qualified professional women architects who 'fit' the profile of high commitment to their career by their investment in qualifications. They work in an established 'traditional' profession in what is still very much a 'man's world'. The research aims to go deeper than just to confirm or disconfirm the stereotypes or profile. Within the structural and cultural components that form the profile, it examines the paths the women have taken, how they have progressed through their working and family lives, the choices and sacrifices they have made. In short, it explores not 'what' they have done but 'how' and 'why' they have done it.

Whiting, Rosalind Heather, and n/a. "Gender, family responsibilities and career success in the New Zealand accountancy profession." University of Otago. Department of Accountancy and Business Law, 2007. http://adt.otago.ac.nz./public/adt-NZDU20070214.145101.

Full text

Abstract:

This study contributes to an understanding of the causes, consequences and complexities of gender inequity in career success (high levels of status and salary) in the New Zealand accounting profession. Sixty-nine (twenty-seven male and forty-two female) experienced Chartered Accountants were interviewed about their career histories. A feminist, interpretative and qualitative approach was followed and NVIVO was used for analysis. The first significant contribution of the study was the identification of five work/family strategies based on levels of family and work involvement (Traditional Men, Traditional Women, Family Balancers, Stepping Stone Men and Work First Women). Secondly, the level of family responsibilities explained career success much better than gender alone, although these two factors were commonly (but not always) directly related. The third contribution was the revision of the three-pronged model previously offered by Whiting & Wright (2001) to explain gender inequities in salary and status in the New Zealand accounting profession. Because the original model was derived from quantitative data, using qualitative data to revise the model constituted a sequential mixed method (pragmatic) approach. In the revised model, gender centrality and the three explanatory categories (Attributes, Structure and Attitudes) were removed. Career success was enhanced by high career aspirations (related to perceptions of stress, managerial and responsibility requirements and remuneration), long working hours and availability to clients, hard work, high technical competence and skills (enhanced by overseas experience), networking (less attractive to women), self-confidence (enhanced by mentoring for the least self-confident), flexibility to relocate if required (decreased by family and lifestyle ties) and large size and growth of the employing organisation. Most influential were career aspirations and a long hours/available work ethic. This demonstrated the pervasiveness of the male linear career model (derived from the male breadwinner-female carer family structure), that rewarded (in terms of progression) unilateral allegiance to the firm. Career aspirations, desire for responsibility, perceived ability to handle pressure, long hours, availability to clients, networking and possibly technical skills (if there were periods of extended leave) were all influenced by the Chartered Accountants level of family responsibilities. Those with the least family responsibilities (childless, Traditional Men and Work First Women) demonstrated unswerving commitment to the firm and were equally the most successful career wise. The impact of family responsibilities on career progression could be ameliorated by organisational cultural change. There were some indications of cultural change, being most prevalent in public sector and educational organisations. Enhancing conditions included a culture of flexibility and a concurrent atmosphere of trust, a less competitive work culture, absence of constant overtime demands and on-call work, encouraging top management who worked positively to retain and foster top performers over a longer period, and high level part-time positions supported by well-trained subordinate teams. To achieve these conditions provides an imminent challenge to organisations which employ Chartered Accountants, because the profession is increasing its proportion of females, has a younger generation more interested in work-life balance, and is losing many of its members overseas.

Yenge, Massa Noela, and Per Karlsson. "The factors influencing students’ career choices towards the accounting profession in Sweden." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Handelshögskolan (from 2013), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-67688.

Full text

Abstract:

Purpose – This thesis aimed at investigating students’ beliefs influencing their personal attitudes and subjective norms not to choose the accounting profession by using the simplified Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) model. Theoretical framework – This study used the simplified TRA model to investigate the beliefs that influence students not to choose the accounting profession. From an accounting context, prior research has indicated that, there are intrinsic and extrinsic factors that determine the behavioural beliefs of students about the accounting profession. Likewise, normative beliefs are another construct of the simplified TRA model that influences students’ intentions towards the accounting profession. Methodology – Through a quantitative approach, questionnaires were sent electronically to first and second year students at five major universities in Sweden. In total, 323 students replied to the questionnaire. Since this study focused on students intending to choose business administration, non-business administration students were deleted from the sample giving an actual sample size of 228. The data collected was analyzed in two steps using multiple regression analysis. Findings – The findings of the study confirmed the simplified TRA model. The results showed that both behavioural and normative beliefs influenced students’ intentions not to choose the accounting profession. For behavioral beliefs, no personal interest in accounting, the belief that accounting is boring and the belief that other occupations (for instance, marketing and management) negatively influenced students’ attitudes not to choose the accounting profession. Similarly, for normative beliefs, teachers and peers influenced students’ subjective norms not to choose the accounting profession. Practical implications – The practical implications of this study are two-folded. Firstly, program directors at universities should engage in hiring qualified teachers in accounting, organize supportive activities to encourage students about the accounting profession. Also, program directors should include compulsory internships in the curriculum so that students can learn about the accounting profession. Secondly, former accounting students should get involved in the process of encouraging students about the accounting profession. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the existing literature by highlighting the beliefs influencing the personal attitudes and subjective norms of students not to choose the accounting profession. Therefore, the thesis provides an up-to-date theory about the TRA in the accounting profession in Sweden.

Abstract:

Although lawyers as a group represent some of the wealthiest and most politically powerful professionals in the United States, within the profession there is a significant amount of inequality. In spite of the divisions that exist within the profession, our understanding of the sources of inequality among attorneys remains limited. This project seeks to address this limitation by investigating how human, cultural, and social capital, along with demographic characteristics, are associated with the development of inequality among a cohort of recent law school graduates as they proceed through the first decade of legal practice. Specifically, using a dataset entitled After the JD: A Longitudinal Study of Careers in Transition, the project examines the relationships between recently minted lawyers' various forms of capital and positive career outcomes during three time periods: the law school-to-work transition, the first two years of legal practice, and the time period where private law firm associates compete to become partners. Findings indicate that each form of capital plays important roles throughout the first decade of practice. During the law school-to-work transition, interpersonal and organizational connections, along with human capital in the form of educational credentials, are associated with gaining employment in prestigious, high paying private law firms. Similarly, during the first few years of practice, connections formed with peers, professional groups, mentors, supervisors, and employers contribute to satisfying work environments. The models show, however, that access to these professional connections, depend on the gender, race, and sexual orientation of the individual lawyers in question, and that, in general, minority groups are at a disadvantage when it comes to the formation and maintenance of these types of professional ties. Finally, the findings also demonstrate that human, social, and cultural capital remain important predictors of career success during the transition to partnership in private firms.

Sekulovic, Adriana. "Profession : agent sportif : contribution à une théorie des modèles professionnels." Thesis, Paris 10, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA100023/document.

Full text

Abstract:

This thesis views sports agents as actors evolving in a dynamic, complex and multi-dimensional work environment. Profession, occupation and work, these three terms, although often used interchangeably yet, remain amphibological given their extreme polysemy. The object of this research arises in light of that ambivalence as a study of an atypical profession with an uncompleted status, teetering between regulation and autonomy. The first section of the study aims to help specify and clarify the terminology being used. In doing so, using the literature from the sociology of professions, it provides a starting point for a suitable theoretical framework that could be applied to the profession of sports agent or to the (sports) agency practice, as a whole. The occupational model of sports agent is framed in such a way that the professional self-regulation is restricted by Sports governing Bodies and State regulatory interventions. Therefore we propose to re-examine the organization and regulation of the sports agents’ activities. The findings indicate significant differences between the regulations applicable to sports agents. The inefficiency of the current regulations whether they are enacted by national sports federations, international sports federation or by the State is closely related to the internal professional dynamics that these regulations disturb. The thesis examines therefore the tasks of sports agents, the individuals that carry them out, and the variable and inconstant connections that tie one to the other. In this respect, as a means of a more accurate conceptualization of its object of analysis, this research describes sports agents’ activities quantitatively and qualitatively, exploring various dimensions and aspects such as the foundations of the profession, the social role of sports agents, the different typologies of sports agents and the occupational tasks accomplished by each. It also highlights the international scope of sports agents’ activities

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study investigated problems experienced by women re-entering into theeducation profession by focusing on: • The nature and scope of re-entry by women into the education profession; • the features and problems experienced by women on re-entering the education profession; • the problems women educators experience on re-entering the education profession in the North West Province. To achieve these goals, both an empirical survey and a survey of literature wasconducted. The study of literature was undertaken consulting primary andsecondary sources. After the problems experienced by women re-entering into theeducation profession were established and discussed, a questionnaire wasdrafted. From the review of literature, it appeared that the problems experiencedby women (i.e. re-entry women) were problems within themselves, in the careerand society, as well as problems in the work situation and on management level.A systematic sample was used in which women educators of secondary schools inthe North West Province were involved. The empirical investigation indicated thatwomen educators have problems when they re-enter the education professionafter a period of absence and that certain problems should be addressed.Problems of high priority are related to the category of problems within women. The categories of problems within the career and the society were indicated asproblems of high priority.A problem of low priority for women educators appears to be the role of familycaregiver for elderly, sick or disabled relatives who live either in the educator'shome or nearby. Also, the age of re-entry women seems to be no problem for re-entrywomen educators.Certain recommendations are made on the basis of the empirical investigation. The most important recommendations are the provision of childcare facilities suchas after-school care, holiday play-schemes, workplace nurseries and an increase inmaternity benefits, and the introduction of paternity and childcare leave. Thecreation of promotion opportunities for women who aspire to educationalmanagement positions is also an important recommendation. All women, including re-entry women, should be treated fairly when applying for posts.

Abstract:

In France, architects form a unique profession with a strong professional identity. Numerousresearch projects have reported changes, developments and adaptations to regularly renewedcontexts of intervention. Beyond the environmental or digital revolution, design processes involvinglocal populations, and more restrictive economic and regulatory conditions, one of the majorphenomena of the last two decades is the internationalization of training courses and professionalpractices. Although historically a majority of the French architects practice where they have beentrained, since the 1980s a growing number of them have been working outside the borders(expatriation, export, partnerships). While the profession was conceived within the framework of theNation, the international condition becomes more frequent. The thesis shows that a "methodologicalnationalism" does not correspond to the reality of practices and representations that go beyondnational territories. The sociology of professions, articulated to works of the sociology of the international, offers newinterpretative frameworks of the practices of architects. They show that the international conditionis an integral part of the training and has effects on the careers: the more students gain internationalexperience, the more they practice abroad. This development becomes the basis of a professionalsegmentation: alter-architects, humanitarian and institutional architects, entrepreneurs and iconsorganize their practices and cultivate the value of their profession in the world. Similarly, the analysisof profiles, in the form of portraits, shows the processes of socialization: the insiders favorable to theinternational cause; the universalists whose values are expressed on this scale; the strategists whoorganize their professional biography abroad; the «bivalents » who alternate local and internationalwork. The internationalization of a part of the graduates does not profoundly transform thecollective identity of the group, but expresses a real renewal, too often underestimated, of actionmechanisms and professional cultures. The research combines qualitative and quantitativeapproaches and several sources: a questionnaire (1698 responses), semi-directive interviews (77), insitu observations, case studies, and a literature review. The results show the transition from atraditional national to an international professional model. Finally, more than in a globalization ofexchanges, the practices of architects are structured between the national and international scales ofaction. An openness to the world that is likely to increase

Abstract:

The growth of the aging population has warranted increased training and education to prepare professionals with the specific knowledge needed to best serve older adults. Gerontology, as an academic discipline, provides professionals with the conceptual knowledge and the skills necessary to address the complexities of working with a diverse aging population. Little research has been done of the characteristics of professionals both with and without formal education in gerontology that are working with the aging population. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of career motivation, job satisfaction, attitudes about aging, career commitment, and professional identity among those working with older adults. An exploration of the characteristics of gerontological professionals has implications for the development of best practice approaches in student and staff recruitment, retention, curriculum design, and training practices. Participants were recruited from volunteers invited from a convenience sample of approximately 7,000 members signed up to receive emails from the Department of Gerontology at a Southeastern University, and a snowball approach with the link to the survey being distributed by various organizations and institutions (e.g., assisted living facilities, Southern Gerontological Society, Therapeutic Recreation Association). Professionals’ age and job satisfaction significantly predicted professional identity. Participants’ career motivation, job satisfaction, and exposure to formal gerontological education (MSE) significantly predicted career commitment. Self-identified professional identity in aging groups did not moderate the relationship between MSE predictors and career commitment. However, aging anxiety mediated the relationship between job satisfaction and career commitment. Finally, age and higher perception of the value of teamwork predicted both level of professional identity and job satisfaction. This study sheds lights on perspectives of professionals working with older adults and highlights areas for future research and training with this population.

Munro, Neil Macarthur. "Postgraduate attachment to general practice : influence on doctors’ future career intentions." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2011. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/6915/.

Abstract:

Recruitment of medical graduates to general practice careers in the UK, as in other developed countries, remains challenging. Currently general practice attracts fewer doctors than health care planners anticipate will be needed to meet the burgeoning health needs of an ageing population. Understanding the factors that influence doctors in their career choices is important to manpower planners, the profession and society as a whole. A two year postgraduate foundation programme for all doctors was introduced into the UK in 2006. One of its main intentions was to provide doctors with postgraduate clinical attachments that would assist them in making informed career choices. This has resulted, for the first time, in large numbers of recent medical graduates experiencing several specialties before applying for specialty specific training programmes. The main aim of this thesis was to assess the influence of a four month postgraduate attachment in general practice in the second foundation year on doctors' career intent. It was hypothesised that the attachment would have a positive impact on recruitment to general practice careers. This hypothesis was tested using a combined quantitative and qualitative approach. A literature review examined career decision making in medicine. It was divided chronologically into sections covering decision making at school, university and in the early postgraduate years. In addition a section focussed on decision making in careers other than medicine. A validated career inventory (sci 59) measuring change in career preference was selected for use in this study. The output is in the form of career rankings among 59 medical specialties. In addition, a semi-structured interview questionnaire was developed based on themes emerging from the literature review and was refined following piloting. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed using NVivo 7. The study was conducted in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery between 2005 and 2008. Participants (n=225) included all doctors whose second foundation year programme included a four month attachment in general practice. They were sent a sci 59 questionnaire at the beginning of their attachment and a further questionnaire at the end. Those responding to both questionnaires were invited to take part in an interview. 112 participants completed sci 59 questionnaires at the beginning and end of their 4 months attachment. Initial analysis demonstrated a small, statistically non-significant improvement in career intent towards general practice. Using a measure that reflects movement in ranking between the two questionnaires, further analysis showed a small, statistically significant, improvement in the ranking of general practice among participants who had low initial rankings for general practice. 30 participants were interviewed. Placements in general practice during the second foundation year were generally regarded in a very positive light. Doctors particularly valued ongoing relationships with patients as well as involvement with local communities. They commented on the high quality of supervision and the structured learning environment of their attachments. General practice was also seen as a better lifestyle option than other main specialties as well as offering flexible working opportunities. New findings included the observation that career ranking for general practice improved following a four month postgraduate attachment in general practice among those less inclined to general practice as a career in the first place. Thematic analysis of transcribed interviews revealed enhanced respect, among foundation doctors, for general practice as a career option irrespective of their own eventual career intent. This improved regard for general practice among doctors intent on specialising may be important in the context of persisting disparagement of general practice by some students, clinicians and teachers. It may also be helpful in engendering mutual respect and more effective working relationships between specialists and generalists in the future.

Abstract:

Concern over teacher shortages has become a perplexing and persistent problem in schools. Teachers are constantly leaving the profession and new entrants into the teaching profession have decreased in recent years, creating a need for recruiting qualified individuals to become teachers and to retain those who are already in classrooms. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that best predict whether high school students are considering teaching as a career and factors that predict whether students' parents would encourage their children to become teachers. A review of the literature revealed potentially influential factors on teacher recruitment and a survey instrument was developed using those factors. All 41 school districts in Utah were invited to participate, with 9 giving permission to administer surveys to parents and juniors and seniors in high school. In all, 285 high school juniors and seniors and 495 parent surveys were analyzed. The survey of high school juniors and seniors focused on two research questions: 1) which factors predict whether high school students are willing to consider teaching as a career and 2) which factors predict whether high school students feel teaching is the best career option for them? Results indicated that high school students were more likely to consider teaching when they had confidence in their ability to be good teachers, when family members and others outside their families encouraged them to become teachers, and when they felt their community supported teachers. The survey of parents addressed two research questions: 1) what factors predict whether parents will encourage their children to consider becoming a teacher, and 2) which factors predict whether parents believe teaching would be the best career option for their children? The results of the analysis indicated 4 factors that are statistically predictive of a parent's willingness to encourage their children to consider teaching. Parents are more likely to encourage their children to become teachers when people outside the family had encouraged the children to teach, if the parents believed their child would be a good teacher, and if parents thought that expectations placed on teachers were reasonable. Results also showed, however, that when considering other professions, parents were much less likely to encourage their children to become teachers in favor of other professions.

Abstract:

Physiotherapy in Sweden has developed from a practical, hands-on, assistant job predominantly taught at college level to a university-based academic discipline emphasising evidence-based practice and research. Women are in majority although an increasing number of men have entered the profession. Women and men physiotherapists tend to undertake different career paths. The overall aim of the present thesis was to use a gender perspective to describe and analyse attitudes to the professional role, health care work and the development of the profession among actors engaged in physiotherapy education. A questionnaire was distributed in 1997 to all Swedish physiotherapy students in the second semester of the education (n=273). The same cohort was investigated in 1999 at the completion of the education. The response rate was 93 percent at both occasions. For an international comparison, the same questionnaire was distributed in 1997 and in 1999 to a group of Canadian physiotherapy students in their first and last semesters (n=60). Qualitative research interviews were conducted with 8 novices in physiotherapy and with 14 women educators in academia. Five focus group discussions with clinical supervisors were conducted (10 women and 5 men). Methods used were Grounded theory, factor analysis, logistic regression and path analysis. Feminist theories and Bourdieu's theory of culture constituted a theoretical framework Four ideal types were identified among the novices representing attitudes to the professional role. The Treater and The Supervisor were attitudes found among the women, whereas The Coach and The Entrepreneur were attitudes among the men. Type of health care facility was important for their positioning in the organisational hierarchy. Swedish students favour future employment in private practice. Sports medicine clinics and fitness centres are health care facilities highly endorsed, as is health promotion. Neither care of elderly nor hospital work are preferable fields of practice. Research is not favoured. Men students are more likely to have chosen the profession because of their interest in physical activity and sports. They are also more likely to prefer owning a private clinic and working with alternative approaches such as fitness training in sports medicine clinics. Women students are more likely to prefer an employment in private practice. The Canadian men students favour private practice whereas the women prefer the public sector of health care. The academic educators experience a gap between theory and practice which causes conflicting messages to students. Competing professions, emergent societal change and a conservative clinical practice constitute threats to the profession. The uniqueness of professional competency, theoretical development and new arenas such as home rehabilitation, consulting and research constitute a vision for future development of the profession. Masculinity is highly valued for status and power whereas femininity symbolises empathy and caring. The clinical supervisors update their theoretical knowledge base through supervision of students, but claim that students lack hands-on skills. Stress at work, unequal power relations in the hierarchy and restructuring of health care are factors that influence work satisfaction negatively. To conclude, gendered habitus, different symbolic capital and different attitudes towards health care work and development of the profession were found in the sub-fields of physiotherapy.

Abstract:

Teachers all over the country are leaving the profession at an alarming rate and by understanding the attitudes and perceptions of both first- and second-career teachers as well as novice and veteran teachers on various areas of teaching, we can begin to identify better and more specific ways to mentor and support all teachers regardless of their age, stage, and life experiences when they enter the profession. The population of the study was limited to 677 kindergarten- through eighth-grade teachers in Sevier County, Tennessee. The study revealed that whether a teacher is novice, veteran, first-career, or second-career, there is no difference in their perceptions concerning the teaching career, no difference in their perceptions regarding the various aspects and challenges of teaching and no difference in their perceptions of how teachers are perceived by colleagues. One difference was found, indicating that novice and veteran teachers have a different perception of their mentoring experiences, with novice teachers rating their mentoring experiences as more positive than veteran teachers. The majority of teachers participating in the study was happy with their chosen career and would encourage others to enter the field. Findings indicated they shared ideas with colleagues and were willing to share in return. Most said that they felt they made a difference in their students’ lives. Student behavior and time were issues of concern to the teachers in the study. Some teachers pointed out that they sometimes were not able to teach because of a student's behavior and that recent problems in society and at home have made this issue worse. Some said the paperwork associated with teaching was overwhelming, and they had difficulty completing the necessary tasks outside of instruction within a normal school day. In spite of the problems, the majority of educators said they would do it all over again.

Abstract:

Within the professional field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), it is not unusual for highly qualified instructors to teach several part-time jobs in order to support themselves. Despite advocacy efforts carried out by the international TESOL organization, finding rewarding full-time employment in the United States can be very challenging. In addition, with the current state of the economy and high unemployment, TESOL professionals like others in various fields are seeking stable employment. Although this research will not solve the lack of full-time jobs, the intention is to help job seekers better prepare themselves for today's job market by knowing the skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics that employers are looking for in potential hires. To identify this information, a 12-month review was conducted of three well-established employment websites in an effort to capture advertisem*nts seeking to hire TESOL professionals full-time for ESL related positions in the U.S. A total of 169 job advertisem*nts were collected and reviewed to identify the skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics employers were seeking in qualified individuals. Data from the advertisem*nts were organized into a 42-category coding scheme in an effort to delineate the skills, knowledge, and job characteristics mentioned previously. In addition, a second coding scheme containing 12 categories was created for analyzing the personal characteristics listed in the advertisem*nts Results from this data revealed that employers seek applicants who have knowledge and experience in curriculum development, teacher education, and program administration. Top skills include written and oral communication and basic computer skills. With regards to personal characteristics, employers are most interested in individuals possessing strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. In addition to these skills and qualifications, the data provide important insights concerning the distribution of jobs by job type, degree, institution type, and salary across five regions of the United States.

Summary/Abstract Diploma work elucidates if it is possible to categorize study - and trade road worse experienced working situation in KASAM. For can to categorize on the basis of KASAM wants to we to know how study - and trade road conductors experience their working situation and how their competence to be safeguarded within their work organisation. Moreover, we have select to rearrange questions how the employer sees on theirs profession and which possibilities they have to skill development. The diploma work is a qualitative study with six different study - and trade road conductors professionally active within State, municipal and private work organisation in west Sweden. Abstract:

Teacher attrition, particularly in hard-to-staff urban schools, is a problem addressed by many researchers. Although this research often focuses on novice teachers, those with three or fewer years of experience, there is a growing body of literature that examines second stage teachers, those with between four and 20 years of experience. Like their novice colleagues, these second stage teachers are also at risk of leaving the profession, which can have negative consequences for students. While much of the research focuses on reasons why teachers leave the profession, there is a growing interest in understanding how teachers reach the decision to remain in the profession. Psychological theory and existing scholarship on the work lives of teachers provides one conceptual framework for exploring the topic of teacher retention. The theory of basic psychological needs explains that teachers, like employees in all other professions need to feel fulfillment of the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness in their professional lives. This contributes to their sense of job satisfaction, or enjoyment, which then makes it more likely for them to remain in the profession. One potential way to help second stage teachers meet these needs and experience job satisfaction is through teacher leadership roles, such as mentoring. The current exploratory study used qualitative methods to interview urban second stage teacher leaders to learn how their experiences fulfill their needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, lead to a sense of job satisfaction, and influence their decision to remain in the profession. The participants in this study all had between four and 20 years of experience and all served in a leadership role as a mentor to pre-service teachers through an urban teacher residency program. They shared details and experiences of their professional lives from their decisions to become teachers in the urban school district, through their novice stage of teaching, and into their second stage of teaching, including the decision to take on the complicated leadership role of serving as a mentor to a pre-service teacher through a yearlong residency program. The participants shared experiences which indicated fulfillment of the three basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. They also shared that they felt a sense of satisfaction both from their work as classroom teachers and their role as mentors. Although they experienced need fulfillment and job satisfaction, participants also shared sources of dissatisfaction, and many explained that they were contemplating leaving the profession, with some feeling that teaching is no longer a long-term career. One noteworthy finding is that participants expressed a desire for feeling like a professional, which played a large role in the career decisions they made.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the meaning of career as a phenomenon and its implication for career guidance. In 1996, career as a phenomenon was more or less considered to be an obsolete or even extinct phenomenon. Since then, career guidance has received increased attention along with the increased interest in lifelong learning strategies. This thesis is motivated by the paradoxical message of career as an extinct yet living phenomenon. Career is outlined as a bridging issue that involves several contexts and is characterized by a number of dominating discourses in tension with one another. Two educational fields linked by career are of particular interest: the field of education and training in working life and the educational field of career guidance counselling. This thesis explores the meaning of career among a triad of various interested parties in this time of transition in the world of working life, and it explores the sense in which such understanding(s) of career influence policies and practices of career guidance. The thesis is based upon four separate studies. The first study explores, in order to disclose underlying views on career, how the language of European policy documents on career guidance characterize career and career development. Qualitative content analysis is used as the basic method to approach the subject in the texts, with an inductive development of categories. The analysis then conducts a sender-oriented interpretation, based upon a textual model for analyzing documents. The results revealed that underlying perspective on career in the documents derive from economic perspective, learning perspective and political science perspective, and communicate career as subordinated to market forces. The second study pays attention to the receiving side of the ideational message, disclosed in the first study. The second study extends the analysis of the first study with an exploration of ethical declaration documents for the profession. The exploration focuses on significant key principles, the profession's role and mission, and significant changes between the initial and the revised ethical declaration. Similarities and differences were compared, combined with the first study’s results as an interpretive frame for analyzing what consequences and significance the core meaning of career at structural level will have for career guidance practice. The results revealed an implicit shift of emphasis in the career guidance mission, which creates uncertainty regarding on behalf of whom the guidance counsellor is working. The third study explores common-sense knowledge of career, among a group of people influenced by changing conditions in working life. This study explores what social representations people have about career. The study also explores how people's anchored thoughts reflect scientifically shaped thoughts, and how they relate to thoughts currently dominating on structural level. Results disclose how the group explored has stable social representations of career that are anchored in the past, in previous working life conditions, and that contrasts with perspectives dominating in the structural context. The group also has dynamic representations, which provide space for negotiation of the meaning of career. The fourth study explores guidance counsellors' social representations of their mission and of careertherein. Results generated four social representations expressed in argumentative pairs of opposites. The first pair is concerned with their professional mission and reveal their professional identity. The second is concerned with career. Their view on their mission and their professional identity is in sharp contrast with how they experience others' interpretation of their mission, as being a matching practice on behalf of the business sector. Guidance counsellors reject the general view of career among others' and they regard career in the context of guidance as something other than the common view. At the same time guidance counsellors reveal difficulties in really clarifying the meaning they ascribe to career. The empirical findings of each of the four studies are finally interpreted as a whole in the final section of this thesis. With support from social representations theory, the empirical findings illuminate the sources as bearers of social representations of career, which both meet and clash.

Stuart, Virginia Barr. "Reasons for Selecting a Teaching Career and Remaining in the Profession: a Conversation With 10 African American Roanoke City Teachers." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27340.

Full text

Abstract:

An acute shortage of African American teachers is wellrecognized. This shortage poses a problem as school systems attempt to employ a representative number of African American teachers commensurate to their diverse student population. The purpose of this study was to examine why 10 African American teachers in Roanoke City selected teaching and remain in the profession and how those reasons were influenced by two motivational variables (academic self-concept of ability and self-efficacy). Factors further affecting this relationship, such as environmental influences (i.e., home, school, and community)and institutional influences (i.e., experiences in the workplace, job satisfaction, and school climate), also were examined.

The research design was a single explanatory case study. Yin (1994) contends that "how" and "why" questions(as used in this study) are explanatory in nature and suitable for a case-study design. Two sources of data were used: an initial survey instrument on environmental factors and a second survey on institutional factors. Two separate interviews were conducted with both instruments. Both sources were intended to capture participants' perceptions relevant to their experiences. A purposive sample of 10 local African American teachers was selected.

Pattern matching and explanation building were the dominant modes of analysis. A conversational style with narratives written was used to reflect the richness of language used by the participants to describe their experiences.

Findings revealed that home environmental experiences and preparation for teaching were positive overall because of practices used by parents and family members to socialize the the participants for success in school. Both direct assistance with school work and verbal encouragement enhanced academic self-concept of ability and self-efficacy for success in school and in teaching.

School experiences before and during college were found rewarding and challenging. However, both types of experiences enhanced self-concept of ability and self-efficacy in attaining a teaching career as well as succeeding and remaining in the profession. Overall, rewarding experiences outweighed challenging ones. High expectations, assistance with school work, and teacher role models were typical examples of such experiences.

Two major community influences played a significant role in interest and retention in teacher-education programs: (a) involvement in church activities and (b) sponsorship for teacher-education programs through partnerships with business and industry. The former reinforced self-concept in ability, and the latter afforded some participants an opportunity to attend college and enter a teacher-education program. Results on institutional factors and teacher retention were associated withexperiences as classroom teachers, interactions with colleagues, relationships with building principals, and perceptions of the school system as a whole.

Abstract:

Racial and ethnic diverse populations experience discrimination in educational and career attainment and remain underrepresented in the counseling profession. The current literature provides limited guidance for the counseling profession and academic institutions for successfully recruiting racial and ethnic minority students in a master's level counselor training program. Social Constructivist theory and Adlerian/ Individual Psychology are the theoretical foundations of the study. This constructivist grounded theory study sought to understand the career decision-making process of African Americans choosing to enter in the counseling profession and the influence of racial and ethnic identity on this decision-making process. Utilizing semistructured interviews via video-conferencing; 43 self-identified African Americans were commissioned to co-create an iterative career decision-making theory that informs recruitment and retention of African Americans to the counseling profession. Following the Charmaz's (2014) approach to data analysis; 15 themes which support the development of Embracing Ujima an interpretive theory of African Americans choosing to join the counseling profession—that informs a framework of recruitment and retention of African Americans to the counseling profession. The implications for social change include closing the knowledge gaps and informing counselor training institutions of the importance of physical representation, a sense of belonging, developing early career pipelines, and positioning counselor educators as the chief career development professionals for the field of counseling.

Abstract:

The purpose of this master's project was to investigate the types of personal characteristics, knowledge, and skills TESOL employers are seeking in foreign job candidates in today's biggest EFL job markets, specifically in China and South Korea. First, the literature review introduces the enormous development of the EFL job market in these two countries and some challenges these two countries faced in their attempt to hire foreign EFL teachers. A total of 303 job advertisem*nts were gathered from two Internet sources (Dave's ESL Café and TESOL.org) that met all the established criteria for choosing a reliable data source during a 12-month period and analyzed in order to determine the personal characteristics, knowledge, and skills listed by TESOL employers in these two Asian countries. The results indicate that 92% of the ads required international applicants to be native speakers of English. Key skills needed in both countries included communication skills, computer skills, a high level of English language proficiency, and writing skills. The majority of the full-time positions sought instructors with experience in materials development, curriculum development, or assessment. In terms of personal characteristics, employers want applicants to be enthusiastic, energetic, dedicated, and interested in young learners ranging in age from kindergarten to high school level. These findings have important implications for those TESOL graduates preparing themselves to obtain full-time jobs in China and South Korea.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of BME men about clinical psychology as a profession. BME groups and men are underrepresented as clinical psychologists and some research exists that provide some explanations for this. These studies seem to focus strongly on the factors associated with the BME groups and have not focused specifically on BME men. The objective of this study was therefore to begin developing an understanding about the factors that stop BME men entering the profession with a particular focus on the factors related to the discipline. A constructionist grounded theory methodology was adopted to analyse the interviews of five men from Black African and Caribbean backgrounds and the grounded theory model 'Underrepresentation of BME men in clinical psychology' was developed. It comprises three categories as understood by the researcher - 'Societal factors (Stereotypes & Inequalities)', 'Clinical psychology factors' and 'Aspects of BME male experience' - which cumulatively lead to low numbers of Black African and Caribbean men as clinical psychologists. The resulting model emphasises the responsibility of clinical psychology in addressing the Underrepresentation of this group within the profession, by addressing its low visibility at degree and pre-degree level, the eurocentricity of its staff composition and theoretical basis and its role at a wider level to address stereotypes and inequality. Further research could expand on the model by exploring the perceptions about the profession with a more diverse and wider sample of BME men at degree and pre-degree level.

Abstract:

Research shows minority teachers positively impact minority student achievement, yet these teachers (especially Blacks and Latina/os) account for the highest percentage of pre-retirement teacher attrition rates. The primary reasons for their premature departures are a lack of autonomy relating to classroom instruction; exclusion from the school-wide decision-making process; and school culture and climate issues. These concerns could be alleviated through the agency of teacher leadership, especially when considering the finding that leadership is second only to classroom instruction when it comes to student achievement. School leaders, therefore, who adopt a distributed leadership model and nurture a culture wherein teachers are empowered to lead reform efforts, could potentially help ameliorate achievement gaps and minority teacher shortages. This mixed-methods, qualitatively dominant study sought to fill the gap in knowledge on the benefits of early career teacher leadership development for minority teachers and its potential impact on teacher attrition rates. Participants were surveyed using the Teacher Leadership School Survey as a means to determine how conducive their individual school’s culture is/was to teacher leadership development and follow-up interviews were conducted to ascertain individual perceptions of teacher leadership and its impact on their decisions to commit to or exit the profession. Findings indicate teachers’ decisions to remain committed to the profession were largely influenced by their intrinsic motivation to teach and champion underserved students; their individual school culture’s conduciveness to teacher leadership development; and the provision of teacher leadership opportunities.

This study aims to understand the senses and meanings attributed by teachers to theirprofessional activity throughout their teaching experience. To this end, we interviewed threehigh school teachers working in the public educational system of São Paulo, each of thembeing in a different career time. The data were analyzed in the light of the postulates of thesocial-historical psychology, focusing on two central categories: meaning and significance. The findings indicated that the meanings attributed by each of the three teachers to theirteaching activities are unique and singular, although sharing some common features.Among these representations, some are worth mentioning: a) the fact that teaching isdefined by common sense ideas, which reproduce and, consequently, perpetuated a samediscourse through generations of teachers. As a result, the necessarily knowledgeconstructed by the specialized literature about the teaching, and the teaching profession, isabsolutely not considered; b) students are seen as unmotivated for learning; c) experience isperceived as more valuable for teaching than teaching formation or continuing education. All teachers pointed out that it is impossible to promote learning in all students, exposing, consequently, a lacks of political commitment with the role of Education.Furthermore, all teachers reported an absence of collaborative work within the school, confirming that the teaching activities are conducted primarily in isolation. Differently, thechanges introduced in the recently implemented educational policies of São Paulo - such asthe use of text books elaborated by the state or receiving credit for the school s results instudents performance evaluation - are seen by each teacher in a particular way. Themeanings attributed to the teaching activity itself are various: it is defined as the ability totransmit knowledge to a person devoid of it, or as the fulfillment of a goal that someone hadalways pursued, or yet as a daily and unfair struggle, given the stress involved in teaching.Based on these findings, the conclusion is that the teaching profession needs to be changedin several aspects, namely: the initial training, as it is currently defined, is not sufficient toprovide future guidance in the profession, so that the offer of continuing education in asystematic way and within the schools themselves is imperative. Finally, it is extremelynecessary to replace the culture of isolation by a collaborative one, allowing teachers tolearn with their peers in exchanging their successful and painful experiences

Abstract:

The community pharmacy has an important scene in the Brazilian public health, and local medication dispensing and continuously promote the consumption of medicines to the population. In these establishments, the user search through the consumption of products, prescribed or no, the restoration of his health. The pharmacist is a health professional with specific training on drugs and that the imperative of health legislation, is placed as technical manager, this locus. What is your motivation to enter this career? How is your practice and what is perceived by him in everyday reality? This study aimed to identify the conception that pharmaceutical technicians responsible, active in community pharmacies in the state of Rio de Janeiro, have on their professional practice and how this vision can be related to the implementation of patient-focused practices, such as pharmaceutical care. 15 semi-structured interviews with pharmacy technicians in the state of Rio de Janeiro were held responsible pharmacists, representing the following typology: pharmacies statewide network of local and family network. The categorization of the speech of pharmacists showed at least four convergences: a deficiency in the academic learning process, pharmaceutical practice migrating to the patient, the continuing difficulties of the population regarding the use of drugs and the superficial knowledge of the concept of pharmaceutical care. It is thought that the actual situation may not be very different from the large number of community pharmacies in the state of Rio de Janeiro itself, calling for thoughts on this topic to bring us to a moment of discussion about which elements are likely to ensure , the pharmaceutical insert with complementary praxis in health services.

Abstract:

In a Swedish context this thesis deals with male integration in the profession of nursing during the last 50 years of the twentieth century. I focus on four different topics. At first the pioneer era is discussed, that is in the beginning of the 50s, when men were allowed to enter the nursing profession and become nurses. Here I discuss on the Swedish Society of Nursings (Svensk Sjuksköterskeförening, SSF)) standpoint on the matter of men’s ability to participate in a sphere so closely connected with professional values as well as feminine values of caring and support. The second topic deals with the question of using the concept ‘sjuksköterska’ (nurse), in Sweden a feminine marked word, as a title for both men and women. The result of a long and keen debate is that a lot of imaginative titles were refused and that still today both women and men use the female title ‘sjuksköterska’. This might be one reason for men not seeking the profession of nursing. In the third place I look at the pecuniary result for nurses especially after 1986 when a new individual oriented wage determination was launched. The local investigation comprises four different clinics at the University hospital in Malmö (Universitetssjukhuset Malmö allmänna sjukshus, UMAS) and takes a special interest in earnings between male and female nurses. In countries with long experience of individual wage systems male nurses usually earn more than their female counterparts. The question I ask is if the same tendency is about to happen in Sweden. Finally, the possibilities of making a career in the profession of nursing is analyzed. The local investigation stresses that female nurses seem to prefer an administrative career in an increasing extent than men do. Male nurses, on the other hand, made union careers in the 70s and 80s and especially the post as ombudsman is popular. In the mid 90s the male appointment to union position is growing weaker probably connected to an increasing feminine consciousness among female nurses. Also the professionalisation process of the nurse corps is shortly examined.

Abstract:

The largest auditing firms are characterized by strict hierarchy with a career ladder. Becoming a partner in a large auditing firm means reaching the highest position within the firm and becoming a part of the firm. Of the hundreds of economists who start their career in one of the large auditing firms, it's only about one of ten who become partners. The purpose of the study is to create a deeper understanding of who makes partner in a large auditing firm and what it takes to be chosen. The purpose is also to understand the role of cultural capital and habitus for an individual's ability to succeed in becoming a partner in a large auditing firm. In the study, a qualitative approach has been used to gain a deeper understanding of who makes partner in a large auditing firm and to fulfill the purpose of the study. In the study eight semi-structured interviews were conducted, including three managers and five partners. Both profession theory and organizational theory has been used mostly as a background description. The main focus of the study is Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital and habitus. Finally, we found that the one who makes partner is the one who has the ability to run the company and generate revenue for the company. It is therefore important to be market-oriented and to like doing business.

Abstract:

For more than twenty years, the sector of socio-cultural and sporting animation is in path of professionalization. However, this branch of activity stays currently characterized by the diversity of the professional statutes of the animators and the heterogeneity of their relations to the activities of animation, education and teaching. This thesis proposes to study the case of the “martial arts teachers”. Based on interviews and observations sets with more than fifty teachers of four Japanese martial arts: judo, karate, aikido and kendo, the purpose of this work is to understand the multiple forms of commitment in martial arts teaching, to observe the overlap between this activity and various spheres of existence, and finally to account about mechanisms of construction of social trajectories, which are structured around an activity lived as a “passion”.

This research has as object of study the teaching profession, which involves the way of organizing the teaching work process, with respect to compensation, initial and continuing training, working conditions, career progression. More specifically, the reflections and analyzes focus on teaching basic education, considering the amendments proposed by the Full-Time High School established by Complementary Law nº 1.164 of January 4, 2012, amended by Complementary Law nº 1.191 of December 28, 2012. To better understand the reality of high school model, offering differentiated working conditions (full and complete dedication, contract through interviews, loan for operations) and new functions (develop mentoring students, prepare electives, and others), implemented in some schools, it makes use procedures of the qualitative approach and the study of multiple case methodology. It is appropriate when the researcher investigates more than one context, what is done in this research. Therefore, in addition to carry out participant observation in a state educational institution of a city of São Paulo, who joined the school model cited, we sought to understand and analyze the teaching career in Guadalajara, Spain. If you bring the Spanish context for the study as an opportunity to enrich the discussions of public policies for the teaching profession, identifying common challenges in terms of valuation of work in teaching. Thus, they were carried out observations in Brazilian school, from the first year of joining the project - 2014 and in the second half of the year 2015 – and were conducted semi-structured interviews with teachers and administrators. Guadalajara/ES were also conducted observations and interviews with faculty advisers and managers on first half of 2015 in four Compulsory Secondary Education schools. The data is organized into categories and analyzed using content analysis. To give theoretical support to the analysis of these data, it proceeds to the survey and bibliographical and documentary analysis. Are problematized as well: the profession of concepts, professionalism and professional socialization; educational Brazil, São Paulo and Spanish laws on issues concerning the teaching career – functions of the faculty, admission requirements and career development, initial and continuing training, and compensation. The results of this study revealed that there are difficulties for the school project implementation High School Full-Time mode as proposed in the written plan, not only with respect to the physical structure, since there were many expectations about the improvement of the educational environment for realization of pedagogical practices that were frustrated, but also to promote the appreciation of the teaching work. There have been some advances in respect to compensation and exclusive dedication, but there is more individual accountability and intensification of teachers' work, possibly due to the policy that underpins the model is the management of results, linked to the idea of Total Quality. In the perception of teachers, both in Brazil and Guadalajara/ES, that teaching has no social prestige. Thus, it is concluded that there is much to be done to: be recognized the importance of teaching; teachers build the way to their professionalism; to understand the need to transcend goals and focus on learning.
