Happy Valentine's Day, IOD family! 💖 Today's all about love, but who says it’s only about chocolates and flowers? Let's sprinkle some of that love on one of our recent thrift scores - a tarnished silver tray. This one is so simple and quick but equally lovely!

You’ll paint your tray with your paint of choice (we used chalk paint) - you’ll probably need several coats to get a nice opacity. Once your paint is fully dry, you’ll apply your transfer of choice. We’ll be applying this darling scene with a little girl in her bonnet, with romantic roses trailing up the side - don’t you just love that vintage typography?

You’ll finish with a top coat in the finish of your choice (we used a flat-out matte). Now, where should we put this little cutie? Wouldn’t it be adorable on a tea table? Or a coffee table vignette? Or to hold jewelry? This project is perfect for many different seasons, so choose the transfer set that matches the vibe you're going for, and be sure to bookmark this one for upcoming seasons!

And because it's Valentine's Day, let's throw in a fun fact to sweeten the deal. Did you know the first Valentine's note was actually a poem from 1415? Yep, Charles, Duke of Orléans, was the OG romantic, sending love letters while imprisoned in the Tower of London to his wife. Captured in battle, but not in spirit, he penned his feelings, proving love knows no bounds. And guess what? This love note is currently in the British Library, still making hearts flutter centuries later. Talk about setting the bar high for Valentine's Day! (if you want to see the original poem, check it out here.)

FAQs

What kind of paint do you use on a silver plate? ›

My first choice for painting these trays is usually chalk paint, and then I like to shabby them up. That is by far my favorite look, especially for something that has all this delicious detail! However, I chose Conch for this piece instead, a beautiful Silk Mineral Paint color, to give it a softer look.

What is the difference between gray and silver paint? ›

There can only be one gray family that is a true neutral as any addition of color changes that color into a definite hue even though it may be imperceptible to the human eye. Silver, in my opinion, is a gray with a metallic finish.

Do silver plated trays have any value? ›

Is silver plate worth anything? Silver plate cannot be melted down and re-sold as sterling silver can, which makes it less valuable than sterling silver. However, there is value in silver plated items which comes less from the value of the silver content than the age, maker and quality of the item.

How do you prepare silver plate for painting? ›

Prep with Slick Stick

Slick Stick is a bonding primer that will bond your paint to non-porous surfaces like glass, laminate, metal, etc with NO sanding required! I used my Belle Brush for this tray since it covers those details so easily!

What paint do you use on metal plates? ›

The best paint for steel is Corotech® Waterborne Enamels for non-ferrous metals and Corotech® Alkyd Enamels for ferrous metals. For priming, use Corotech® Universal Metal Primer for non-ferrous metals and Corotech® Alkyd Primers for ferrous metals.

Can you enamel silver plate? ›

Enamels can be applied to glass, ceramics, and most commonly, metals. The application of enamels can add color to metals such as copper, silver, and gold. The powdered glass can be applied either wet or dry to a surface. The enamel melts, flows, and fuses to the surface in a smooth coating when heat is applied.

How do you keep silver plates shiny? ›

Instead of commercial silver polishes that contain harsh chemicals, polish silver with baking soda, water and aluminium foil for a fast and easy way to restore the shine.
