Pattern

With your yarn choice and a 4 mm (US 6) crochet hook, make a slipknot.

  • Ch 3 – join to form a circle.
  • R1 – ch 1, work 6 sc through the center of the ring.

Attaching the circles together

  • Count 5 stitches back on the first circle piece and sc the two pieces together back to back.
  • R5 – work 1 sc in every stitch around – until you come back to the beginning tail.
  • R6 – work in the round – sc – there will be a decrease at each side of the heart as follows:
  • To do a sc decrease – put your hook through the first stitch, wrap the yarn over, pull it through – 2 loops on hook – put the hook through next stitch, yarn over then pull yarn through when you have 3 loops on hook. (See the video tutorial in the pattern post for help)
  • Work sc until you come to the opposite side, decrease on the opposite side.
  • Continue to do a sc decrease on either side of the heart for all rounds until the heart is forming a point.
  • Stuff the heart with toy stuffing or polyfill as you work, as the opening will get smaller and harder to work.
  • In the last round – one sc decrease in each stitch.

Learn All About Crocheting Hearts

How to crochet a heart shape?

Crocheting a heart shape can be a delightful and creative process.

Here’s some advice to keep in mind as you embark on crocheting heart shapes:

  1. Start with a Simple Pattern:
    • If you’re new to crocheting hearts, begin with a simple pattern. Look for tutorials or patterns with step-by-step instructions and clear visuals. As you gain confidence, you can explore more intricate designs.
  2. Understand Basic Shapes:
    • Break down the heart shape into basic components, such as curves and points. Understanding the anatomy of a heart will help you visualize the stitches needed to create it.
  3. Experiment with Stitch Combinations:
    • Hearts can be formed using a combination of basic crochet stitches, including single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and triple crochet. Experiment with different stitch combinations to achieve the desired shape and texture.
  4. Adjust the Size:
    • Depending on your project, you may want hearts of different sizes. Experiment with changing the initial chain length and the number of stitches in each row to create hearts of varying sizes.
  5. Play with Yarn and Hook Size:
    • The size and weight of your yarn, as well as the size of your crochet hook, will impact the final appearance of your heart. Thicker yarn and larger hooks will result in larger hearts, while finer yarn and smaller hooks will produce smaller hearts. Play around with different combinations to see what you prefer.
  6. Customize Colors:
    • Hearts are often associated with romantic and vibrant colors like red, pink, and white. However, don’t hesitate to experiment with other color combinations that suit your personal style or the theme of your project.
  7. Add Embellishments:
    • Once you’ve mastered the basic heart shape, consider adding embellishments. This could include surface crochet, embroidery, or attaching smaller crochet motifs to enhance the overall design.
  8. Practice and Patience:
    • Like any skill, crocheting hearts improves with practice. Be patient with yourself, especially if you’re a beginner. Start with small projects and gradually work your way up to more complex patterns.
  9. Use Stitch Markers:
    • When working with complex patterns, use a stitch marker to keep track of important points in your heart. This can help you maintain symmetry and avoid mistakes.
  10. Enjoy the Process:
    • Crocheting hearts should be an enjoyable and creative experience. Have fun experimenting with different techniques and creating unique heart shapes. Let your creativity flow!

Remember that there’s no right or wrong way to crochet hearts.

Enjoy the process of creating something handmade and filled with love.

Which crochet hook to use?

For crocheting a heart, it’s recommended to use a crochet hook that corresponds well with the yarn you’ve chosen.

For a medium-weight yarn (worsted weight yarn), a hook in the range of 4.5mm to 5.5mm (US 7 to H-8) is a good starting point.

However, the size of the heart and the desired drape of the finished piece can influence your choice.

If you aim for a delicate heart, consider using a smaller size crochet hook (US E-4 to G-6) 3.5 mm to 4.0 mm crochet hook.

Conversely, if you want a larger and more pronounced heart, opt for a larger size, around (I-9 to K-10.5) 5.5mm to 6.5 mm crochet hook.

Additionally, the handle type may be less crucial for small projects like hearts, but choose one that feels comfortable during your crocheting session.

Experiment with different hook sizes to achieve the desired size, appearance, and texture for your crochet heart.

What is the best crochet stitch for an amigurumi heart?

The choice of crochet stitch for a heart largely depends on the desired texture, style, and purpose of the project.

Here are three common stitches used for crocheting hearts:

  1. Single Crochet (SC): The single crochet stitch is often used for creating small and tight stitches, making it suitable for intricate or detailed projects like small appliqués or amigurumi hearts. It provides a smooth and solid fabric, and its simplicity is great for defining the clean lines of a heart shape. Single crochet stitches are often used when working on projects with smaller hooks and finer yarn. Learn how to crochet the single crochet stitch here. – How To Single Crochet (SC)
  2. Double Crochet (DC): Double crochet stitches are taller than single crochet stitches and can add a bit of openness and drape to your heart. This stitch is commonly used for larger or more decorative hearts, such as those in blankets, scarves, or shawls. Double crochet stitches can create a more lacy and open texture, allowing the heart to stand out with a bit of dimension. Learn how to crochet the double crochet stitch here. – How To Double Crochet (dc) For Beginners.
  3. Half Double Crochet (HDC): The half double crochet stitch falls between a single crochet and a double crochet in height, offering a balanced and slightly taller stitch. It can be a great choice for hearts, providing a bit of height without the openness of a double crochet.

What is the best yarn color for crochet hearts?

The choice of yarn color for crochet hearts depends on personal preference, the intended purpose of the hearts, and the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for. Here are some popular and symbolic yarn color choices for crochet hearts:

  1. Classic Red:
    • Red is a timeless and classic color associated with love and passion. Red yarn is a popular choice for Valentine’s Day and romantic-themed projects. Consider using different shades of red, from bright and vibrant to deeper and more subdued tones.
  2. Soft Pink:
    • Soft pink is a gentle and sweet color that conveys affection and tenderness. It’s a versatile choice for various projects, especially if you want a more subtle or pastel look.
  3. White or Cream:
    • White or cream yarn can evoke a sense of purity and simplicity. It’s a lovely choice for wedding decor, baby projects, or any design where you want a clean and elegant appearance.
  4. Variegated Yarns:
    • Variegated yarns with a mix of colors can add visual interest to your crochet hearts. Look for variegated yarns that include shades of red, pink, and possibly other complementary colors.
  5. Rainbow:
    • If you want to add a playful and vibrant touch, consider using a rainbow-colored yarn. This can create cheerful and eye-catching hearts, perfect for various projects.
  6. Metallics:
    • Yarns with metallic accents, such as gold or silver threads, can add a touch of glamour to your crochet hearts. This is an excellent choice for festive occasions or when you want a more luxurious look.
  7. Gradient or Ombre:
    • Gradient or ombre yarns that transition from one color to another can create a beautiful effect in your heart. This is particularly appealing for projects where you want a subtle shift in color.
  8. Earth Tones:
    • For a more natural or rustic feel, consider using earth-toned yarns. Shades of brown, tan, or muted reds can give your hearts a cozy and warm appearance.
