What to expect when visiting Bali

Ubud is the cultural capital of Bali — a fascinating mix of nature, historic temples, and traditional art and crafts. Its serene vibe and lush green landscape attract not only adventurers but also travellers looking for wellness and yoga retreats.

This upland town is home to the iconic Tegallalang Rice Terraces, a sacred monkey forest, the impressive Goa Gajah ancient caves, and an impressive art scene. Ubud’sfamed art heritage dates back to the early 20th century, and it is arguably the most famous traditional arts hub in Southeast Asia.

3 ways to get from Bali Airport

There are three ways to travel the distance of 14 km (9 miles) from Bali Airport: by taxi (20m – 1.5hrs), private transfer (20m – 1.5hrs) and motorbike (20m – 1.5hrs). The journey takes between 1h50m and the quickest way is by taxi. The lowest priced tickets start from 60,000 IDR ($3.80) for the motorbike.

If you’re a solo traveller carrying just one piece of luggage (preferably a backpack), then you have the option to travel by motorbike taxi from Bali Airport. The motorbike is the cheapest way to get to your hotel, but finding one at the airport is not that easy.

Motorbike (Gojek) drivers are usually camped out outside the domestic terminal, particularly near the Starbucks between the ordinary and premium parking lots. You’ll hear them offering rides as you get near.

Fares for a motorbike ride to Kuta start from 60,000 IDR ($3.80). Note that they only accept 1 passenger per motorbike.

Renting a private transfer is the best way to get from Bali Airport to your accommodation on the island. You can book them beforehand so that you won’t have to worry about anything else upon arrival. Thereby, they’re considerably cheaper than most rides you can get from the airport.

Klook is our preferred private car provider from Bali Airport. They offer good cars with reliable drivers for rates starting from 95,000 IDR ($6.00). Fares vary depending on where you’re heading. See below for a fare guide for the more common destinations:

If you’re not able to book a private transfer before arriving at Bali Airport, you also have an option to just hop in a taxi.

A lot of the taxis waiting at the airport work on a fixed-price basis. You’ll hear them calling out as soon as you come out of the arrivals hall. However, we don’t recommend them as they normally offer exorbitant rates, which are double or triple the actual cost.

Unless you’re really good at haggling, you might be better off getting a taxi using one of the following methods:

  1. Kunnen jullie mij advies geven hoe ik het beste/goedkoopste kan boeken van Nederland naar Bali.

Alvast bedankt voor de moeite, Otto

    1. Hi Otto! The easiest way to get from the Netherlands to Bali is by flight from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Denpasar Airport. You can find the best rates on Skyscanner — with fares ranging from 550 USD to as much as 1,000 USD, depending on your travel date. Using full month calendar view will help to find the best dates. Qatar Airways often offers the cheapest fares, with a short stopover in Doha. It also helps to search from multiple airports.

Another tip: Fares from Brussel or Dusseldorf Airport are sometimes cheaper (which might be convenient too if it’s not too far from your home).

We hope this helps. Safe travels!

  2. Ik zou graag met de fastboat Gili Getaway van Gili Trawagan naar Serangan willen. Is dit een betrouwbare fastboat

    1. Hi Anja,

I’ve personally never traveled with Gili Getaway but it seems to be a legit company. However, we would rather recommend to travel from Gili to Padang Bai. Although this port is more north of Serangan, the ferry trip will be shorter and as the oceans can be quite rough between Bali and Lombok, it’s better to spend less time on the ferry. Another advantage when travelling from/to Padang Bai is that you can take the Eka Jaya ferry, which I personally like the most because it’s the largest, most stable ferry. You can find more information about the route between Bali to Gili Islands here.
