Tropical Garnish Ideas

For garnishing we suggest Grabbing some cool whip and adding a spoonful on top or using a spray cool whip, cut pineapple into small pieces to place on top of your drink. The pop of yellow adds a very vibrant color to these red and white jello shots. Plus who doesn’t enjoy a healthy snack after!

You can also consider adding some sliced strawberries on top too! To create a fun look try adding pineapple on some and strawberries on others to create a pattern on your serving tray! Since not everyone is a fan of pineapple.

Add fruit and cool whip right before serving.

Non-Alcoholic Miami Vice Shot Options

If you are looking to have some kid friendly options or just wanting to serve those that aren’t drinking. Consider omitting the rum all together and just serve a jello shot. These are delicious with or without after all. You can substitute some juice in it if you want, we suggest a fruit punch! Be careful not to over add.

Ensure you have on a separate tray as once these are made it’s hard to tell what has rum and what does not. Enjoy!

How To Make These Miami Vice Inspired Shots

Besides these ingredients, you’ll also need a few mixing bowls, something to boil water in, and containers to make your Jello shots. I like to use small condiment jars with lids to make shots ahead of time, then garnish right before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 box of Pina Colada Gel-Shotz gelatin
  • 1 cup of boiling water
  • 1 cup of Malibu Rum
  • 1 box of Strawberry Jello
  • 1 cup of boiling hot water
  • ½ cup of chilled strawberry Rum
  • ⅓ cup of chilled spiced Rum

Instructions

You’ll need to factor in chilling time to this recipe so I suggest making them ahead the day before.

Pina Colada Layer:

  1. Using a muffin pan, place the cups and tilt to the side.
  2. Set to the side.
  3. Add 1 cup of water in a pot and bring it to a boil.
  4. Place the Gel-Shotz in a bowl.
  5. Add the boiling water to the Gel-Shotz, whisk to dissolve the gelatin.
  6. Stir in the chilled malibu rum.
  7. Fill ½ of each shot cup.
  8. Place in the refrigerator for 3 hours.

Strawberry Layer:

  1. In a bowl add your strawberry jello mix
  2. Mix hot water and cold water to make your jello.
  3. Once mixed well, add your strawberry rum and spiced rum
  4. Combine well.
  5. Pour on top of shot cups.
  6. Refrigerate for 3 hours.

Optional: To create a slanted look, slightly prop tray with shot glasses up so liquid goes more to one side, when it comes to adding the next layer simply prop it the opposite side. This step is completely optional. You can simply layer as normal and still create the two layer look.

Why did my jello shot not set? ›

Jello shots won't set properly if you add too much alcohol. Generally, a basic batch of jello shots is made with one cup of juice or water, one packet of gelatin, 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/2 cup of alcohol.

Does it matter how much vodka you put in jello shots? ›

A standard recipe made with 3 ounces of Jell-O powder calls for 5 ounces of 80-proof vodka and 11 ounces of water, but this results in a shot that tastes watered-down. To make a stronger shot, use just 4 ounces of water and between 8 and 14 ounces of vodka (to taste)

Should alcohol be cold when making jello shots? ›

If you are in a hurry, you can set your jello faster by having your liquids as cold as possible when starting to make your shots. You can have your alcohol in the freezer to get it cold, and/or you can add some ice cubes in with your cold water and remove the ice that's left after 2-3 minutes.

Is 1 cup of vodka too much for jello shots? ›

This jello shot recipe uses 1/2 cup vodka for 12 shots = 1/3 ounce vodka per shot. That's 4 jello shots to equal 1 regular shot of vodka. Even if you take out the cold water and use 1 cup vodka = that's still only 2/3 ounce vodka per shot. This is typical of jello shots.

Why do you need cold water for jello shots? ›

Pour a half-cup of ice water into the bowl and whisk to combine. Adding this to the gelatin (along with the spirits) helps it set and firm up more quickly, which is necessary to achieve that "jello" texture, so the colder the water then the better. Pour the mixture into plastic or paper shot glasses.

Do you spray cups for jello shots? ›

Place shot glasses on a baking tray for easy transport. Pour gelatin mixture into paper or plastic shot cups* and chill in refrigerator until set, 1 hour or more. *Reviewers suggest coating the shot cups lightly with cooking spray so the shots slide right out.

If you're making them for potency and less for taste, this probably is the best option. Try using flavored vodka to make it more palatable. Rum – This is my favorite alcohol to use, it tastes great with pretty much every jello flavor, it's smooth, and flavored rums can really add a lot to a shot!

How long do you have to let jello shots sit? ›

How Long for Jello Shots to Set? If you're wondering how long it will take for your jello shots to set, it depends on which type you make, but a general rule is two to four hours. A basic jello shot recipe should be allowed to set in the fridge for at least two hours. Four hours is better.

Why do you flip jello shots upside down? ›

To do it, simply pour your liquid Jell-O shot into the cups, add the lid, and then flip each one before refrigerating. The result is a shot that sticks to the lid rather than the edges of the cup, allowing you easy access to that Jell-O goodness and making it so much easier to slurp down.

Do jello shots get stronger the longer they sit? ›

Jello Shots, like life, are all about balance. That said, if you want a strong one, it is possible if you leave it in the fridge long enough. In a Supercall experiment, we found that the strongest Jello Shot that will set is three-to-one ratio of 80-proof alcohol to water, and it took a full day to become mostly solid.
