Old-Fashioned Cherry Cobbler is absolutely heavenly. Truly, this is one of those desserts that will have you drooling from the first smell out of the oven! The ironic thing is when you put the recipe into the oven it looks awful. 🙁 It’s one of those recipes where you pour boiling syrup over top of everything else. Then as the dessert bakes it leaves a luscious cherry syrup on the bottom and a nice crust layer on top. This cobbler is marvelous.

We had a friend recently undergo full knee replacement. As it happens, he has two adult children and their families staying with them while they’re renovating or looking to purchase houses. When I asked his wife about bringing over a meal, she told me Larry really loved cherries. That was his favorite dessert. So I told her I would come up with a dessert that had cherries. I wasn’t planning on making any more recipes this summer with cherries, but I couldn’t resist making something they would enjoy. I also threw in some Fresh Cherry Muffins. They loved all of it.

Of course, they had to have real food too. I made them a tasty Chicken Noodle Casserole, Broccoli and Pearl Onion Casserole, my favorite Creamy Grape Salad, Greek Tomato Salad and a loaf of Rapid Rise Italian Herb Bread. She was concerned that I had so many people to feed. I told her I was used to making meals for lots of people. She relented and allowed me to bring them a meal. Not only was there enough, there was enough for two full meals out of all of it. 🙂

When Jamie brought the dishes back last week, she exclaimed about how much they loved this cherry cobbler recipe. Their family was so grateful to not have to cook a meal for a couple days after Larry’s surgery, either. We have known this family for over 20 years. They typically always serve others, but I wanted to find a way to bless them too. Taking meals to others is certainly a blessing especially after surgeries, sickness, new babies are born or for funerals. We were glad to participate.

I adapted this recipe from my fantastic Tennessee Peach Cobbler recipe. Since they originate from Memphis it might have seemed a little familiar to them. 🙂 Anyway, if you’re looking for a spectacular way to enjoy fresh cherries, Old-Fashioned Cherry Cobbler is the recipe for you. It will surely cure any sweet tooth craving you have. However, you may find yourself wanting more than one piece!

Old-Fashioned Cherry Cobbler is irresistible.

This dessert can be eaten plain with the syrup from the bottom of the pan drizzled over top.

Or, eat Old-Fashioned Cherry Cobbler ala mode.

Here’s what I did.

I used these ingredients for the cherry layer.

Place dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.

Stir to combine.

Add milk.

Add pitted, halved cherries and almond extract. (I patted the cherries dry with paper towels before adding here).

Stir gently to combine.

Pour cherry mixture into a greased 9×13″ baking dish.

I used these ingredients for the topping.

Meanwhile, make topping. Place sugar, brown sugar, butter and almond extract in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Add water.

Bring to a boil and stir until sugar is dissolved.

Pour boiling brown sugar mixture over top of cherry layer in baking dish.

Bake at 400 degrees for 50-60 minutes or until done.

These pictures don’t show the cherry syrup poured over top, but that’s the best way to serve this dessert.

Fresh cherries are delightful in this delectable dessert.

If you enjoy cobbler recipes, you’ll love this one with cherries.

Old-Fashioned Cherry Cobbler is a terrific dessert for company. It’s also great for holidays like Labor Day or Fourth of July.

Here’s the recipe.
