German authorities see Islamic extremist motive in Mannheim knife attack

  • AP

German authorities say they have uncovered evidence of an Islamic extremist motive in last week’s knife attack in the southwestern city of Mannheim in which a police officer was fatally injured. The justice minister wrote on social media late Monday that “there are now clear indications of an Islamist motive” for the attack. He said federal prosecutors, who are responsible for terrorism and national security cases, are taking over the investigation. The federal prosecutor’s office confirmed Tuesday that it has taken on the investigation, citing the significance of the case and the suspicion that it was religiously motivated.

Australian military will recruit some noncitzens in a bid to boost troop numbers

  • By ROD McGUIRK - Associated Press

The Australian government says its military will begin recruiting some noncitizens in a bid to boost troop numbers. Defense Minister Richard Marles says the move announced Tuesday is part of an effort to build a military that can resist foreign coercion through blocked trade routes. Only people from other members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partnership — New Zealand, the U.S., Britain and Canada — who hold Australian permanent residency will be eligible. Marles says the change is a major step toward addressing a 4,400 shortfall in the Australian Defense Force, which aims at 63,600 full-time personnel.

The Australian Olympic Committee has named an 18-player squad to compete at the Paris Games led by Steph Catley in the injury-enforced absence of captain Sam Kerr. Catley, vice-captains Emily Van Egmond and Ellie Carpenter, Mackenzie Arnold, Caitlin Foord, Alanna Kennedy, Clare Polkinghorne and Tameka Yallop will all become three-time Olympians in Paris. Australia beat China 2-0 on Monday night in its last home friendly before the Paris Games.

With time short, veterans seize the chance to keep their D-Day memories alive for others

  • By DANICA KIRKA - Associated Press

Ken Hay’s part in the invasion of Normandy lasted just a few weeks, but he wants to make sure the experiences of those who fought and died to end the Nazi grip on Europe live forever. The British Army veteran was captured a few weeks after the D-Day landings in Northern France when his patrol was surrounded by German troops. Now the 98-year-old Hay visits schools whenever he can to tell his story. He doesn't want the battle to liberate France and defeat Nazi Germany to become a dusty relic of history like the Greek and Roman wars he read about as a child.

Stock market today: Asian shares decline after report shows US manufacturing contracted in May

  • By ELAINE KURTENBACH - AP Business Writer

Asian shares have retreated after a report showed that U.S. manufacturing contracted in May. India's Sensex dropped 4%. Oil prices fell and U.S. futures were flat. On Monday, the S&P 500 edged up 0.1% although the majority of stocks within the index fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.6%. Treasury yields dropped after a report showed U.S. manufacturing shrank in May for the 18th time in 19 months. Stocks of companies whose profits are most closely tied to the strength of the economy posted the worst losses. Energy companies fell after crude prices tumbled. But gains for Nvidia, GameStop and others helped to stem the slide.

South Korean president vows to expand aid contribution, mineral ties with Africa

  • By KIM TONG-HYUNG - Associated Press

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol says the country will expand development aid to Africa and pursue deeper cooperation with the region on critical minerals and technology. Yoon made the remark as he hosted a meeting Tuesday with dozens of African leaders in Seoul. In his speech to the Korea-Africa Summit, Yoon also urged African countries to take firmer steps in an international pressure campaign against North Korea. The North recently accelerated its tests of nuclear-capable weapons systems and flew hundreds of balloons to drop tons of trash and manure on the South as relations between the war-divided Koreas worsen.

Ippei Mizuhara, ex-interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani, expected to enter guilty plea

  • By STEFANIE DAZIO and AMY TAXIN - Associated Press

The ex-interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to plead guilty to bank and tax fraud in a sports betting case. Ippei Mizuhara is expected to admit to stealing nearly $17 million from the Japanese baseball player. Tuesday’s change-of-plea hearing in federal court in Santa Ana, California, occurs as the Dodgers begin a three-game series in Pittsburgh. The gambling scandal shocked baseball fans from Japan to the U.S. and ratcheted up a media frenzy that’s ever-present around Ohtani. Authorities say there was no evidence Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s gambling, and the player cooperated with investigators.

Amanda Knox will defend herself in an Italian court against a 16-year-old slander charge

  • By COLLEEN BARRY - Associated Press

Amanda Knox will be back in an Italian courtroom this week to defend herself against a 16-year-old slander conviction that she hopes to beat once and for all. This was made possible after a European court ruled that Italy violated her human rights during a long night of questioning after the murder of her British roommate in November 2007. The slander conviction for accusing a Congolese bar owner in the killing is the only charge against her that withstood five court rulings that ultimately cleared her in the brutal murder of her roommate, 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, in the apartment they shared in the idyllic central Italian university town of Perugia.

Arizona proposal to let local police make border-crossing arrests is set for lawmakers' final vote

  • AP

Arizona lawmakers are expected to take a final vote Tuesday on a proposal that would ask voters to make it a state crime for noncitizens to enter the state through Mexico at any location other than a port of entry. The proposed ballot measure would draw the state directly into immigration enforcement by letting state and local police arrest people crossing the border without authorization. If it clears the Arizona House, the proposal would bypass Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who previously vetoed a similar proposal, and send it to the Nov. 5 ballot for voters to decide.

Silence and heavy state security in China on anniversary of Tiananmen crackdown

  • AP

Security in Beijing is tight around Tiananmen Square on Tuesday as China marks 35 years since the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests that killed hundreds, if not thousands. Police checkpoints and rows of police vehicles were seen along major roads, while hundreds of tourists lined the streets leading to gates to enter Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. China has long quashed any memory of the killings, when the Chinese government ordered in the army to end the months-long protests and uphold Communist rule. An estimated 180,000 troops and armed police rolled in with tanks and armored vehicles, and fired into crowds as they pushed toward Tiananmen Square. The death toll remains unknown to this day.

US urges UN Security Council to support cease-fire plan in Gaza announced by President Biden

  • By EDITH M. LEDERER - Associated Press

The United States is urging the U.N. Security Council to support the three-phase plan announced by President Joe Biden aimed at ending the nearly eight-month war in Gaza, freeing hostages and sending massive aid into the devastated territory. U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield says the United States circulated a draft resolution Monday to the 14 other council members to back the proposal for ending the conflict that began with Hamas’ surprise attack in southern Israel on Oct. 7 that killed some 1,200 people. In a steatement, she sayd: “Numerous leaders and governments, including in the region, have endorsed this plan and we call on the Security Council to join them in calling for implementation of this deal without delay and without further conditions."

Mourners can now speak to an AI version of the dead. But will that help with grief?

  • By KIRSTEN GRIESHABER and HALELUYA HADERO - Associated Press

Several companies have emerged in the last few years to develop grief-related technology, where users can interact with an AI version of the deceased. Among them is Eternos, which uses an in-house model as well as external large language models developed by major tech companies like Meta and OpenAI. Eternos records users speaking 300 phrases and then compresses that information through a two-day computing process capturing a person’s voice that loved ones can then access. While some have embraced this type of technology as a way to cope with grief, others feel uneasy about companies using AI to try to maintain interactions with those who have passed away. Still others worry it could make the mourning process more difficult because there isn’t any closure.

After guilty verdict, Trump will appear on the ballot in the last presidential primaries of 2024

  • By MICHELLE L. PRICE - Associated Press

Donald Trump’s name will appear on the ballot for the first time since his historic conviction of felony crimes as a handful of states hold the last Republican presidential primary contests of 2024. The former president will be on the ballot in Tuesday's Republican contests in Montana, New Jersey and New Mexico. President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, will compete in Democratic primaries in the same states, plus the primary in Washington, D.C. and one in South Dakota. Republicans in D.C. held a party-run primary in March, and in South Dakota, the GOP presidential primary was canceled because Trump was uncontested. Voters will also cast ballots in primary races for federal, state and local offices in those states.

Southwest US to bake in first heat wave of season and records may fall

Parts of California, Nevada and Arizona are expected to bake this week as the first heat wave of the season arrives with triple-digit temperatures. That includes Phoenix, which last summer saw a record 31 straight days of at least 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The National Weather Services says most of an area stretching from southeast California to central Arizona will see “easily their hottest” weather since last September by the middle of the week. Record daily highs will be in jeopardy from Las Vegas to Phoenix. Excessive heat warnings have been issued from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Friday.

Democratic primary for DC Council held against a backdrop of crime in the nation's capital

  • By ASHRAF KHALIL - Associated Press

Tuesday’s Democratic primary in heavily Democratic Washington D.C. will largely focus on crime, policing and law enforcement — hot-button issues in a city where violent crime spiked dramatically last year. Although the numbers for homicides and carjackings are down so far in 2024, the political dynamics and tensions from last year’s crime spree continue to play out this year, with leftist and centrist wings of the Democratic Party facing off in multiple races. Five of the 13 council seats are on the ballot, with easily the most competitive being the 10-candidate race to replace retiring Ward 7 councilmember Vincent Gray. The primary is largely viewed as a de facto election in a city where the Democratic Party dominates political life.

Justice Department's 'deepfake' concerns over Biden interview audio highlights AI misuse worries

  • By DAN MERICA and ALANNA DURKIN RICHER - Associated Press

The Justice Department says it's concerned that releasing audio of President Joe Biden’s interview with a special counsel about his handling of classified documents could lead to deepfakes that trick Americans. It’s the latest argument by the administration to fight the release of the audio, which Republicans allege the Democratic president is trying to suppress because he doesn't want voters to hear it. The admission highlights the impact the AI-manipulated disinformation could have on voting and the limits of the federal government’s power to combat it. A conservative group that is suing to obtain the audio says the argument is a “red herring.”

Hunter Biden's federal firearms case is opening after the jury is chosen

Opening statements are set to begin in the federal gun case against President Joe Biden’s son Hunter. A jury of 12 and four alternates was seated Monday. The first lady attended the proceedings and so did Hunter Biden's sister Ashley. Hunter Biden has been charged with three felonies stemming from a 2018 firearm purchase when he was, according to his memoir, in the throes of a crack addiction. Jury selection moved at a clip Monday in the president’s home state, where Hunter Biden grew up and where, the elder Biden often says, the family is deeply established.

Tractors rumble in streets again ahead of EU polls. Farming is a big issue and the far right pounces

  • By RAF CASERT - Associated Press

Tractors are rumbling through the streets again days ahead of the four-day European Union elections. The populist and hard right groups have instrumentalized agriculture throughout the 27-nation bloc in the months leading up to the polls. They claim farmers have become the victims of an overbearing EU and environmentalists that fail to take their considerations into account. The issue is expected to have a real impact on the outcome of elections where populist and hard right parties are expected to surge.

Tuesday's primary in Montana will lock in GOP challenger to 3-term US Sen. Jon Tester

  • By AMY BETH HANSON and MATTHEW BROWN - Associated Press

Montana voters will select a Republican challenger to three-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in Tuesday’s primary election. They'll also pick candidates for governor and an open U.S. House seat being vacated by far-right conservative Rep. Matt Rosendale. Republicans have dominated recent Montana elections. They need to pick up just a couple seats in November to take control of the U.S. Senate. First-time candidate and former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy has far outraised his opponents in the GOP senate primary and was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. The open House seat is in solidly-Republican, largely rural eastern Montana.
