The Snow Bound Scarf is a wonderful scarf to wrap around you to keep warm while heading out in the snow. This has optional pockets to keep your hands warm too. Made in Tunisian crochet stitches with several stitch videos to guide you through.

I really enjoy making Tunisian crochet fabric. You gather up your stitches on your hook, and then crochet them off to complete one row.

Hook: Tunisian Crochet Hook: M / 9.00mm with cable
Yarn needle

Yarn

Red Heart Gemstone, color – Diamond, 2 skeins
Each skein = 200 g / 7 oz; 285 m / 312 yd
#5 Bulky weight, 100% Acrylic

beg – beginning

ch – chain

RS – right side

tps – Tunisian purl stitch

tss – Tunisian simple stitch

tslst – Tunisian slip stitch

tts – Tunisian twisted stitch

yo – yarn over

14 x 9 rows = 4 in (10 cm)

Tunisian Purl Stitch(tps): Watch videoHERE.

(A)-Forward Pass: Place working yarn in front of hook, insert hook from right to left under next vertical bar, yo, pull up a loop. (1 tps).

Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss): Watch video HERE.

(A)-Forward Pass: Insert hook from right to left under next vertical bar, yo, pull up a loop. (1 tss).

Tunisian Slip Stitch (tslst): Watch videoHERE.

*Insert hook from right to left under one vertical bar, yo, pull up a loop, pull that loop through loop on hook, 1 loop remains, repeat from * across to last st. Put hook through last stitch of row, going through both loops on edge, yo, pull up a loop, pull that loop through loop on hook, 1 loop remains.

(A)-Forward Pass: Insert hook from right to left under next vertical bar, remove hook, rotate loop to the right, insert hook back into same loop, yo, pull up a loop. (1 tts).

General Notes

  • Worked in rows, A & B to complete one row.
  • Use an Afghan/Tunisian crochet hook with a cable.
  • Do not turn. Right Side (RS) is always facing you.

Ch 26
Row 1:
(A)-Forward pass:(RS) *Insert hook in next back bump of ch, yo, pull up a loop, repeat from *, in each back bump of each ch across. (26 loops).

(B)-Return pass:(RS) yo, pull through 1 loop on hook (ch made), *yarn over, pullthrough 2 loops on hook*; repeat *-* across until 1 loop remains on hook.

Rows 2-7:
(A)-Forward pass:*1 tps in next st*, repeat *-* across, 1 tss in last st, going through both loops on edge. (26 loops).

(B)-Return pass:Repeat Row 1(B).

Row 8:

(A)-Forward pass: 1 tps in next 4 sts, 1 tss in next 16 sts, 1 tps in next 4 sts, 1 tss in last st, going through both loops on edge. (26 loops).

Repeat: 4 tps, 16 tss, 4 tps, 1tss.

(B)-Return pass: Repeat Row 1(B).

Row 9:

(A)-Forward pass: 1 tps in next 4 sts, [1 tss in next st, tts in next st] 8X, 1 tps in next 4 sts, 1 tss in last st, going through both loops on edge. (26 loops).

Repeat: 4 tps, 8 v’s, 4 tps, 1tss.

(B)-Return pass:Repeat Row 1(B).

Row 10:

(A)-Forward pass: 1 tps in next 4 sts, [1 tts in next st, [tss in next st, 1 tts in next st] 7X, 1 tss in next st, 1 tps in next 4 sts, 1 tss in last st, going through both loops on edge. (26 loops).

Repeat: 4 tps, 1 tts, 7 v’s, 1 tss, 4 tps, 1tss.

(B)-Return pass:Repeat Row 1(B).

Rows 11-144: Repeat Rows 9-10 (A & B).


Rows 145-150: Repeat Rows 2-7 (A & B).

Row 151: *1 tslst in next st*, repeat *-* across, 1 tss in last st, going through both loops on edge, sl st. (1 loop on hook). End off yarn. Weave in ends.

POCKETS

Make 2.

Ch 18

Row 1: Repeat Row 1 above.

Row 2:

(A)-Forward pass: [1 tss in next st, tts in next st] 8X, 1 tss in last st, going through both loops on edge. (18 loops).

Repeat: 8 v’s, 1tss.

(B)-Return pass:Repeat Row 1(B).

Row 3:

(A)-Forward pass: 1 tts in next st, [tss in next st, 1 tts in next st] 7X, 1 tss in last st, going through both loops on edge. (18 loops).

Repeat: 1 tts, 7 v’s, 1 tss.

(B)-Return pass:Repeat Row 1(B).

Rows 4-16: Repeat Rows 2-3.

Row 17: Repeat Row 151. End off yarn, leave a long 20 inch tail for seaming.

Place pocket over the Rib section at the end of scarf, just where the purl stitches start, sew it in place.

FRINGE

Make 13 tassels for each end of scarf, 26 in total. Cut 14” pieces of yarn. For each tassel take 2 strands of yarn and fold in half. Pull folded loop through scarf end and thread tassel ends through the loop, pull tight to make the knot. Evenly place 13 tassels across both ends of the scarf.

End off yarn, weave in ends.
